We trained an entire generation to compete with AI at pattern recognition. The machines are winning. I help universities and organizations rebuild learning around the one thing AI cannot replicate: human agency. I co-founded two universities, and today I build AI learning systems that put this conviction to the test.
If AI can pass your exam, the exam is the problem.
Knowledge is abundant, searchable, and increasingly machine-generated. An education system built on transferring and testing knowledge now certifies exactly the skills AI does cheaper, faster, and better. That is not a crisis. It is a correction.
What remains valuable is what machines cannot do: starting new things, exploring problems nobody has defined yet, working under genuine ambiguity, taking responsibility for outcomes you cannot predict. I call this agency, and I believe developing it is the actual purpose of education in a world shaped by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, and AI.
Self-efficacy is not soft. It is strategic.
This is not theory for me. At CODE University we replaced lectures and exams with real projects and competency feedback, and one in ten students founded a company during their studies. Today I test the same principles with AI: learning systems that coach instead of answer, that strengthen memory instead of replacing it, and that leave the learner more capable, not more dependent.
